Cardinal fans say goodbye to seniors.
Saturday night was filled with a lot of emotion and excitement! Cardinal fans packed the gym to support the four senior Cardinals in the last home game of their basketball career at Andrews University. They would not leave their fans disappointed, getting the win over Moody Bible Institute, 81-37.
The Cardinals faced Moody Bible a week and a half prior to their meeting Saturday evening in a match that the Cardinals came out of as the victors, winning 70-41. In Saturdays matchup, the Cardinals traded bucket for bucket with Moody, exchanging the lead without either team taking control. Moody came with a vengeance that would keep them in the game until the 10:00 mark in the first half.
With the game tied at 19 the Cardinals defense really put pressure on Moody trying to secure a lead by halftime. Senior guard Tyler Wooldridge helped his team to take the lead. He scored 13 points and dished out 8 assists for the game. The Cardinals went on a 19-2 run in the last 10 minutes to gain a 17 point lead.
The chemistry of the Cardinals could be seen very clearly as their defense was clicking on all cylinders. The defense forced 21 turnovers for the game which ultimately gave the Cardinals the lead. With 18 steals and 4 blocks the Cardinal defense was on fire which spread to their offense. The Cardinals shot an impressive 50% for the game while holding their opponents to only 25%.
Senior guard Junior Orelus scored an outstanding 27 points with 21 of his points coming from downtown. When asked about his time as a Cardinal he said, "I made friendships that will last a long time".
Moody was only able to score 16 second half points while the Cardinals posted 43 points in the second half. Matthew Little contributed 17 points and came away with 5 of the Cardinals 18 steals. Little said, "I will never forget the feeling when my name was announced for the last time at home and I was happy to see all of our fans in the crowd".
The Cardinals hit 13, 3-pointers for the game with the best one coming late in the second half from senior center Clifford Allen. After the game, Allen said, "I was a little anxious at the beginning of the game, but after halftime I just resolved to make it a night I could remember". Allen made it very memorable indeed when he fired off a shot close to 5 feet behind the 3-point line that sent the gym into a thunderous roar when it went through the rim! Allen's 3-pointer put the Cardinals up by 40 points and would help them coast to the win over Moody, 81-37.
At the end of the night the three seniors, Orelus, Little, and Allen, will all agree with a statement by Wooldridge who said, "These guys have been my brothers for 4 years now and the memories I've made with them will be something I never forget".
The Cardinals will be heading to Uniontown, Pennsylvania on Monday, March 3rd, for the 2014 USCAA Basketball National Championships. This is the 4th consecutive year that they will be in attendance of the tournament. The Cardinals are hoping to bring home their 3rd championship trophy in 4 years.
